About Hebridean Coastal Stories

Hebridean Coastal Stories (HCS) is an interdisciplinary socio-ecological storytelling project. HCS emerged from a desire to amplify the voices and lived experiences of islanders–voices that are often marginalized in discussions around marine management and broader socio-ecological challenges.

About the Founder

Chloe McKenna is a marine social scientist with a deep interest in the connections between people and the marine environment.

In November 2024, Chloe McKenna graduated from the Marine Systems and Policies MSc Program at the University of Edinburgh. Her dissertation focused on the socio-ecological impacts of marine plastic pollution on Scottish island communities with a focus in the Outer Hebrides.

Inspired by the islanders and stories she encountered during her research, Chloe founded HCS as a platform to continue sharing these insights beyond academia, making space for island voices and coastal experiences to be heard more widely, particularly in the context of plastic pollution and waste governance.

With a background in grassroots organizing, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and ocean advocacy and education, Chloe is committed to advancing just and sustainable solutions from the local to the global level. Her research and practice are driven by interests in sustainable ocean governance, environmental and ocean justice, and cultural heritage.
